Mmmm Mangoes!

These yummy mangoes arrived a few days ago from ksquest! She took this picture of them before she mailed them out. Thank you so much, k!
I had never eaten a mango before. Oh, I have had the Del Monte canned tropical fruit cocktail which has bits of mango in it but I've never had fresh mango fruit. Those bits in the canned fruit don't even taste like this.

I had read about how to cut up a mango but it didn't work out so smoothly for me. After I washed it up real good, I tried to slice it alongside the seed but I kept hitting the seed no matter where I tried to slice it. I was planning to slice it on each side of the seed like the instructions say and then do the criss-cross cutting of one side of the cut fruit without going through the skin and then I was going to push the fruit outward like this. I wasn't able to do it that way so I ended up slicing off pieces of it and eating the fruit off the skin. The skin was thin like a pear's and the fruit inside was kind of like the consistency of a firm cantaloupe's fruity inside. It was very juicy and very tasty!
K had warned me about how some people have an allergic reaction to mangoes but so far I haven't had any problem. My mother is just now getting over a bad case of poison ivy and since the mango sap that is on the outside contains the same toxin (urushiol) that is found in poison ivy, she doesn't want to chance touching them. So I have prepared some cut up pieces for her and Dad to eat so there shouldn't be a problem.
These are so yummy. I can't imagine having them growing in your back yard free for the picking. Mmmm!
Tonight is the last night of my vacation. Back to work tomorrow. Ugh.
I am hoping it won't be too busy since it will be Memorial Day but sometimes the holidays can be the busiest times for the emergency room. The week went by too fast.
My daughter wasn't able to come up for a visit. Yes, I was disappointed.
We talk to each other all the time on the phone but it isn't the same. She says she is going to try to come up next weekend but we'll see.
I keep trying to put proper spacing between my paragraphs but they won't show up after I click "publish post". It is annoying me after several tries. Oh well.

Mangoes are sooooo yummy. I make a mango chicken recipe that everyone around here loves.

I didn't know that about mango skins and poison ivy. Learn something new everyday!

Chickie, I would love to have your recipe!

Mrs Who, I didn't know about that either until k sent me a little "warning email". They sure are tasty!

I have that same problem with spacing in paragraphs, I even tried HTML and it didn't work either. I'll figure it out someday.

I didn't know mangoes were cousins of poison ivy! I'm still getting over a mild case of it, so I don't blame your mother for not wanting to take any chances.

I have never tasted a mango. I've led a sheltered life. :)

Cindi, that was great! Thank you so much for that post. This time I learned some new mango news! The way you handled it for your mother was exactly right. Perfect.

I could never make those beautiful crosshatched cubes like in the fancy Mango Cutting Pix. It was totally beyond me.

As long as the *peel, and cut some fruit off, and suck the rest off the seed* technique does the trick - standing over the kitchen sink! - I figured, if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

If you have a whole mango branch hanging over your fence like I do? At least you get some practice cutting them. Even though I never mastered the crosshatch technique, I got pretty okay at figuring out how to cut the fruit away from the seed. You just have to go through a lot of mangoes to get the feel for it. Like anything else, really.

I brought the last few with me up here and my parents just now ate them, tonight. They really loved them. I come from a long line of serious fruit eaters, and it seemed so fitting to bring the last few of this batch to my folks. I usually only see them in winter, when they come to Ft. Lauderdale off and on, so they've never had my mangoes.

This was SUCH a blast, sending boxes of REAL mangoes around to some of my all-time favorite bloggers. I'm so glad I did it! And I'm not done yet, either. Just between crops.

Sue? You never had a mango?

We have 2 crops this year, which is very unusual. The next batch will ripen between June and July. As soon as I get some ripe ones - so will you.

This is definitely one of those experiences that brings one OUT of a sheltered life! They are very, ummm...very sensual fruits. In all the best meanings of that word.
